We have been ready to move for a while now, and those of you who wanted to be part of the Digital Media & Learning network can now do so freely at HASTAC.org.

Seth Godin gave a talk at TED in February that speaks directly to the work we do with digital media and learning. "Find something worth changing, and then assemble tribes that assemble tribes that spread the idea and spread the idea and it becomes something far bigger than ourselves. It becomes a movement."

I'm helping organize an Earth Science Education Summit later this year and would be interested in getting ideas from you about organizations that you feel would contribute to the enhancement of earth science education in K12 in the US. Continue
It's very cool how things can start coming together before the work has even begun. I'm in the progress of organizing both an advisory team and a development team for this project. The advisory team has been ridiculously easy - there are so many people who are interested in providing help and support! I am fortunate that Jed Macosko, a physics professor at Wake Forest University, has been deeply involved with the project, finding numerous professors at Wake to help out and offer their expertise.… Continue
Canada has a crisis of historical amnesia. We no longer inspire our youth and our newest citizens and immigrants with Canada’s national story. No other Western nation does a poorer job of teaching history than Canada.
That is why I applaud some of the recent remarks and deci… Continue

Graduate journalism students Ian Monroe and Kathryn Murphy at Northwestern University's Medill School did a really nice job covering our recent HASTAC/MacArthur Foundation Digital Media and Learning Launch and Showcase in Chicago.
"Whether it’s mapping an ancient Roman burial route over time, constructing a homemade flashlight or learning how to make art from recycled materials, HASTAC and the MacArthur Foundation are helping fund the digital media experiments that could provide innovative lear… Continue

I was quite excited about the breakout sessions, particuarly the session as the title suggests, about reaching underserved communities. I was excited about the international aspect, but also the values that come with working with underserved communities.
As I joined the session, M-Ubuntu were discussing their efforts in working with mobile phones in educa… Continue

After a full day yesterday of talks, presentations, breakout sessions, and even a laptop orchestra performance, day two kicks of with even more excitement in the air. The crowd is even more comfortable with each other, and even friendlier after spending most of the day and night together. When MacArthur said “welcome to the family,” I wasn’t entirely convinced. After spending just one day with their staff and their grantees, I know exactly what they mean.
Connie Yowell is speaking now about par… Continue

I took a quick tour of the floor of the exhibition hall of all winning projects, where last year's winners were explaining their projects a year after receiving funding. Many looked very cool, and seemed to have accomplised alot since last year. I hope that some or all of the projects go on to have a dramatic impact on the world and help make the world more just and more equitable.
